This page will show the progression of painting this portrait. I will be adding pictures daily to show the progress.
An early step is to sketch a likeness on the canvas with vine charcoal and pencil. The charcoal allows me to smudge in some values.
A subsequent step is to mix a pallette. At this stage I am getting skin tones and establishing color harmony. Below you can see I have started putting in the first colors.
Time to start a new painting - Thursday - May 10, 2012
I plan to paint an oil portrait of this cute little dog. After preparing my canvas with several layers of gesso, sanding between layers, I am ready to start. I want to establish landmarks and a correct drawing and values as I can. I have decided to use acrylic underpainting. First I drew Crocket with pencil, then charcoal, sprayed with fixative, now at the stage shown, I am painting in a gray scale using black and white acrylic paint.
When I am satisfied with the grayscale, I will be ready to start painting with oils.
When I am satisfied with the grayscale, I will be ready to start painting with oils.
Thursday, May 10,2012 - my daily progress. It is near completion. I need to make a few corrections and touch a few areas.
I had to fix a couple of areas to improve the likeness . I like this much better.. So I am calling this painting finished.
